Compiling the uncompilable: A case for shell script compilation

Shells, as command interpreters,are the classical way for humans to interactwith
computing systems, and modern shellfeatureshaveextended this basicfunction-
alitywithhigher-level programming language constructs.Althoughimplementing
compilationintheseshell languagesisgenerallyunpro?tableandintractable,many
advantages, suchasisolation,?lesystemabstraction,security,portability,paral-
lelizationandlocality optimization arepossible,usingstandardcompilationtech-
niques.Whilecompilationisnotpossibleforallscripts, thereexistshellscriptsofa
classthatare,inpractice, bothpro?tableandtractable tocompileandexecute.This
classofscriptsisprevalentinthescienti?ccomputingcommunity, wherescriptsare
commonlyusedtoautomatedata processingsequences. Wedescribeaprototype
shell compilation andimplementation forthesescripts,noting advantagesandchal-
lenges,and illustratingthesigni?cantperformancepotentialavailable.Ourresults
showthatshell compilationisaviablemeansofautomaticallyidentifyingandex-
ploitinghigh-levelprogramparallelismusing existingsequentialscriptspeci?cation
andwithoutrequiringreimplementation.
